Baby Clothing Sizing - Does One Size Really Fit All?

My first experience buying Wholesale Baby Clothing online was pretty confusing, especially when buying clothing from other countries and trying to understand their sizing. When I stumbled upon this sizing issue I thought it was pretty important to share as it can be confusing if you're buying for your first child or giving baby clothing as a gift.

Fact Number 1... One size doesn't fit all. Ok, this is pretty obvious, but what you may not be aware of is there are different sizing methods dependent on what part of the world you live in, or in my case, what part of the world you're buying Baby Clothing from.

Children's sizing is separated by region/ country and is the standard measurement for that region. This is similar to shoe sizing, women's clothing or different methods of sign language dependent on what part of the world you live in (yes there are different types of sign languages around the world and yes, this is your useless fact for the day).

Baby Clothing Sizes never used to be an issue

This was rarely an issue prior to the Internet as most people were none the wiser and simply purchased based on their countries own standard, but with this transition comes a whole new level of depth to the existing confusion of buying baby clothing for your little loved one.

One of the easiest ways to overcome the confusion is through the use of a Baby and Toddler Sizing Charts that clearly layout the important information based on:

- Age

- Height

- Weight

- Country

- Sizing Method

I remember when my beautiful baby girl came in on the scene were given a number of different outfits including a range of one and 2 piece outfits that had all these different numbers on them.

At that stage we had no idea what the measuring system was and we had to take each one and place them against her to understand what would fit. This actually went on for a while and we had tears from me and my bub, till I stumbled upon a baby sizing chart.

Many tears and a little knowledge later

After the tears I came to understand using a sizing chart in advance is a great tip when considering buying wholesale baby clothing for your own darling daughter or to give as gifts.

So, how do the different sizing standards stack-up?

Here's my take on the different measurements based on country -

Euro Sizing - In my opinion Europe uses one of the best standards, with their standard measuring close to the actual length of your baby (from the top of the head to the heal). Presuming you know the actual height of your child this can be fairly easy to use as a guide, although challenging if your buying clothes as a gift.

Australian Sizing - This would be my second pick of the bunch and would have been my favorite if it wasn't for the sizing prior to 12 months (with sizing 0000, 000, 00 and 0 can be a bit confusing). From 12 months onwards the sizing of your child matches the age (if your daughter were 2, you would buy size 2 clothing and so on). This of course doesn't always match, but as a general guide is a lot easier if you're looking at buying clothing as a gift.

UK and USA sizing - These are fairly similar till your child reaches 24 months at which time they change over to a strange measurement slightly out of alignment with your child's age and with the introduction of additional letters. If you don't have kids and you're buying as a gift or this is your first time you may find your self a little confused.

When looking at any sizing charts always use a combination or height, weight and age to determine the best size and if in doubt buy the next size up, especially when your darling daughter is fairly young. If you buy a little larger they'll grow into their little outfit. In the first 6 months there's nothing worse than getting a gift only to discover it's too small or will only get one wearing, especially if they are going through a growth spurt.

A Beginner's Guide to Purchasing Wholesale Baby Items

The economy is in rough shape. Why slave away at a job you do not like while stressing about job security? Many have found, even in these tough times, that entrepreneurship might be the best option to do something they love, while building something stable for the long term. One recession-proof market that is worth entering is the baby items industry. Although birth rates have declined each of the last 3 years, there were still over 4 million babies born in the United States last year, and each new birth means plenty of parents, family members, friends, and co-workers looking to buy baby items as a gift for the newborn. The market offers many opportunities, but if one has never run a retail shop before, they will probably have several questions. One of them will be how they should go about finding merchandise to stock.

The Benefits of Purchasing Wholesale Baby Items

Whether one is stocking clothing, toys, blankets, or any number of other products, a wholesale baby items supplier will provide a business owner what they need, at a good price. Most of these resellers do not have a storefront of their own, so the only way for them to make money is to sell their goods to store owners for far less than what they will retail for. As a result, one might encounter a minimum order quantity, or even discounts that go into effect once certain quantities are ordered. Wholesalers thrive on building long-lasting relationships with retailers, so discounts for frequent shoppers will also be available. Plus, while other boutique owners might source their goods from many different vendors, and have to pay high shipping costs for orders from each vendor, those who buy wholesale baby items will have lower shipping costs. That means higher profit margins for store owners!

Things to Consider When Choosing a Supplier

In addition to the availability of numerous discounts as mentioned previously, there are several other factors store owners should keep in mind while evaluating wholesalers. After price, the most important factor will probably be diversity of merchandise. It is always cheaper for a store owner to acquire goods from as few sources as possible, so acquiring wholesale baby clothing, toys, blankets, and other goods from one source will cut down on time spent searching for merchandise, and money spent on shipping.

One should also do plenty of research on vendors before making a purchase. Many websites have popped up claiming to be wholesalers, pricing their items just one or two dollars below retail in order to lure in bargain shoppers. Compare prices of the wholesale baby items you are considering to ensure they are wholesale prices. Also, make sure they ask you to prove you are a retailer, as legitimate wholesalers are picky about who they sell to.

When it comes to stocking wholesale baby clothing and other items, a little bit of research, combined with the advice in this article, will get your shop one step closer to profitability.

Shop owners who have never stocked wholesale baby items and wholesale baby clothing should follow the advice in this article to make sure that they maximize profits.

Wholesale Organic Baby Clothing Niche

The organic baby clothing market is a rapidly growing niche and is an essential one to consider for your wholesale baby clothing business. This kind of clothing is getting more and more popularity with green-minded parents who are concerned about their baby's well-being as well as the environment. The trend these days is to be more eco-friendly and being more green so it definitely worth adding to your business's inventory.

What is organic clothing?

Organic baby clothing is made from natural resources, the most popular being organic cotton. Traditionally cotton is the most broadly used fabric to produce all manners of clothing but is treated with a great number of agricultural chemicals and pesticides when being grown, then has further numerous toxic chemicals added during the manufacture of clothing. This results in damaging effects to our natural environment and can also trigger respiratory problems, allergies or skin problems due to the absorbed toxic chemicals within the fabric.

Organic cotton on the other hand is produced naturally and there are absolutely no harmful chemicals, dyes or pesticides used during the produce of organic clothing using it. This not only makes it environmentally secure but really soft and comfortable to wear, ideal for babies' sensitive skins.

In addition to cotton, more recently bamboo and even hemp are being used for the manufacture of organic clothing giving an even bigger range of clothing lines.

Why is it popular

Due to the clothing being manufactured from chemical-free materials, this drastically reduces the chance of any skin allergies for babies. Baby skin is really sensitive as it is not fully developed so is not immune to certain chemicals the way adults are. Organic clothing is also super soft and normally tends to be more durable, making it perfect for newborns that regularly need their clothing changed.

Another reason for the popularity of these kinds of baby clothes is the fact that entirely natural materials are good for the environment. With the in thing being green these days and everybody waking up to the fact we all need to make more of an effort to protect our planet, there is growing interest in organic clothing.

What to look for

When purchasing stock for your wholesale baby clothing business you will probably come across many suppliers supplying organic baby clothing, so be sure to check out the following:

Always check the label - Ensure the label says it is 100% organic cotton or 100% certified material and not blended organic, as this tends to be blended with synthetic material such as polyester. Occasionally you'll find it'll just say organic on the front or rear of the clothing but the label needs to be present to ensure it an authentic organic garment.

Check the dye - Make sure the color dye is not chemical based as this would defeat the purpose of organic clothing, instead it should be a herbal based or plant-based dye to make it organic. Also check the logo inks are made with water-based/pigment type inks and not PVC type inks which can be toxic.

Fabric - You will notice organic clothing will be lot more softer, a lot more flexible and hard-wearing than regular clothing. The color of the material will also be more natural looking as opposed to normal synthetic clothing eg. natural cotton whites tend to be more yellowy rather than chlorine treated bright whites.

Check company credentials - Most companies who deal in organic baby clothing will be fair trade certified or affiliated with a trade or farm association. This will help authenticate the clothing as proper organic as it is an offence to pass something as organic when it has been subjected to chemicals.

Be sure to check the above points to ensure you are being provided authentic organic wholesale baby clothing. Once you do, offering these types of clothing lines will not only make your business more profitable but you will be helping the planet in the process!
